Iran strongly condemns the use of chemical weapons by terrorists in Syria, underling the need for disarming terrorists operating in the Arab country and declares readiness to treat victims.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi offered his condolences to the Syrian people over the deaths of people in a recent suspected chemical attack in Khan Sheikhoun town, Idlib province that killed scores of people and wounded hundreds more.
"We strongly condemn any use of chemical weapons regardless of its perpetrators and victims," the Iranian spokesman stated.
"This painful disaster" is not the first case of using chemical weapons in the Syrian crisis, he said, adding that adopting double-standard stances toward the issue will hamper efforts to address such disasters. Qassemi also emphasized that Iran is ready to assist Syria and admit those injured in the incident.
At least 70 people, including 11 children, have been reported killed in the town of Khan Sheikhoun after a suspected chemical weapons attack on Tuesday morning.
Syria has categorically denies using any poisonous gases in Khan Sheikhoun or in any other city or village, affirming that the Syrian Arab army doesn't possess any form of the chemical weapons. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad has said the Syrian government provided the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) with information on the transporting of toxic substances into Syria by al-Nusra Front terrorist organization.
He reaffirmed that Syria stands against using chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere, and under any circumstances. He added that using chemical weapons by terrorist organizations again on Syrian territories aims at achieving a cheap political gain and justifying their failure in the talks of Astana and Geneva.
